More than an organization — a home.
DIAZ is a general nature-lovers' organization based in Malang, with membership open to everyone.
The organization was formally founded on 13 September 1975, following the first pataka expedition to Kembar II Peak on Mount Arjuno. Since 2011 it has been a legally registered association.

Specializations
Mountaineering is not treated as a specialization because it is the baseline skill every member acquires during basic training.
Caving / Speleology
The science of cave exploration: vertical rope techniques, horizontal passage travel, cave mapping, and the geology and ecology of karst, including surveys of its conservation potential.
Whitewater sports (ORAD)
Rafting, river boarding, kayaking and canyoning: reading currents and rapids, paddling technique and teamwork, descending canyons and waterfalls, and river safety and rescue. DIAZ members competed as athletes at the National Games (PON).
Scuba Diving
Diving with breathing apparatus: dive planning and safety, equipment mastery, underwater navigation and underwater rescue. DIAZ members have also competed as diving athletes at the National Games (PON).
Rock / Wall Climbing
Natural rock and artificial wall climbing: movement technique, protection and knots, Single Rope Technique and rappelling, and risk management at height.
Conservation
The science of caring for the environment: the basics of ecology, river-basin surveys, tree planting, coral reef rehabilitation, and environmental education.
Search and Rescue
Search and rescue across difficult terrain: operation management, navigation, first aid, casualty evacuation and field communication.
Land Navigation
The science of finding position and direction outdoors: reading topographic maps and the compass, orienting in the field, planning a route, and using GPS as a complement.
Ultra Cycling
Long-distance endurance cycling: route and provisions planning, pacing and nutrition, bike maintenance on the road, and the physical readiness to cover hundreds, even thousands, of kilometres in a single ride.
Survival
The science of staying alive in the wild: building a shelter and a fire, finding and treating water, managing supplies, and deciding calmly when lost or caught in bad weather.
Leadership
The craft of leading in the field and in the organization: situational leadership, deciding under pressure and uncertainty, team and risk management, communication and the sharing of roles, and mentoring younger members.

DIAZ formally founded in Malang
The organization was formally founded after the first pataka expedition to Kembar II Peak on Mount Arjuno. The original pataka read “DIAZ Expedition & Mountaineer ASSCTN” and was carried by the group remembered as “the thirteen”.
1977
First statutes and household rules adopted
Adopted in Malang at 14:00 local time by a drafting team led by Eddy Purwanto (D.13933). These rules established the Javan Hawk-Eagle, Compass Shield, and Peg emblem, along with the yellow 125 x 90 cm flag.
2011
Incorporated by notarial deed No. 13
Executed before notary Vivit Novitasari, S.H. with twelve signatories, then registered with the Malang District Court registry under No. 25/APR/2011 on 25 April 2011.
2025
Underwater flag ceremony at Pasir Putih, Situbondo
Dedicated to Indonesia's 80th Independence Day and the organization's 50th anniversary. Four teams of seven to eight divers were deployed: a flag-raising ceremony team, an organizational pataka team, a 50th Anniversary banner team, and a support team.
